SICK Employees Support Free Bikes 4 Kidz organization in Detroit, Michigan
For the fourth consecutive year, SICK's Detroit office proudly supported Free Bikes 4 Kidz (FB4K), a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping children ride into a healthier, happier childhood by providing bikes to those in need.
What is FB4K?
In 2008, FB4K was born as a one-time hobby in a two-car garage. A group of passionate cyclists collected, refurbished, and gave away 250 bikes over a two-week period. Since then, that hobby has grown to become the largest organization of its kind in the country.
Every year, the organization hosts regional bike collection events in the early fall. The public donates gently used bikes, then hundreds of volunteers over a couple of months clean and refurbish them to give them away to kids in need. It’s easy to see why this organization has been able to provide thousands of bikes to kids over the last few years!
There are locations across the United States, but SICK employees in Detroit volunteered for the fourth year in a row with this great organization.
Breaking Last Year's Record
In 2023, FB4K Detroit collected, refurbished, and distributed over 2,000 bikes, along with new helmets, to underserved children in the community. The success of the event was made possible by the hard work of dedicated volunteers who meticulously refurbished the bikes, ensuring each child could experience the joy of their very first ride. In 2024, the organization is hoping to break last year's record. So far, they have received 2,181 donated bikes in 2024!
The event saw an impressive turnout from SICK Detroit employees, with special thanks to Ken Yaxley for his efforts in organizing this meaningful initiative.
“I had a great time with my SICK colleagues. It's always rewarding to help out for the fourth year in a row with Free Bikes 4 Kidz,” said Ken Yaxley, Senior Sales Engineer – Industrial Robot Applications at SICK.
