Presence Sensing Device Initiation (PSDI) refers to the use of a presence sensing device (like a light curtain) to safeguard the machine and to initiate the machine cycle.
PSDI does this by sensing when the work motions of the operator (such as feeding and removing parts from a press) are completed and all parts of the operator's body have been removed from the sensing field. PSDI replaces manual controls by automating the initiation of the machine.
The Benefits of PSDI
By cutting down on the extra steps required by manual controls, each operator and each machine in the plant can complete cycles at a faster rate. This not only increases production, but it also allows the companies to avoid investing in new machines due to the increased throughput of existing machines.
Depending on the application and the machine, implementing PSDI can increase productivity anywhere from 10% to 100%. The increase in production can pay for the PSDI system cost within months. In addition, the improved ergonomics can lead to increased operator duration at the work station due to a decrease in total movements.
Who Can Benefit from PSDI?
While PSDI cannot currently be used on any mechanical power presses in the United States, there are many applications that can greatly benefit from it. In general, a small-to-medium part press that is driven pneumatically or hydraulically, and where the machine’s motion is capable of safely stopping based on the safe distance calculation, is a good candidate for PSDI.
PSDI is designed to streamline your processes, and replace two-hand controls in applications such as:
- Small Part Metal Bending and Forming
- Fastening and Joining
- Inspection and Testing
